Patients who visit the doctor with complaints of recurrent tonsillitis, snoring or sleep disturbance frequently fall into this category. After a complete history and evaluation, most patients initially will be advised of lifestyle modifications and possibly placed on new medications. Patients may undergo special studies, including fiberoptic examination of the airway and sleep polysomnography. Those patients who fail to respond may be recommended for surgical treatments, including tonsillectomy, unulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) or somnoplasty.
