The Patient Education Program is designed to educate the diabetic patient in the self-management of their disease. Sutter also offers cholesterol/diabetic healthy heart education to those patients with elevated lipid levels.

In the Patient Education Program, the patient is allowed ten hours of training in the first year and two hours of training in subsequent years. The first year’s training consists of an initial four-hour class with subsequent two-hour classes offered in meal planning/carbohydrate counting and meter use/pattern management for a total of nine hours of class training. Along with this training the patient is eligible for a one-hour, one-on-one appointment with the diabetes educator. Patients with special needs such as problems with hearing, vision, mental disability or language limitations may be scheduled for a total of 10 (ten) one-on-one counseling appointments with the educator. Educators are available to give insulin injection instruction to patients generally within 2-3 working days.
